THREE SIMPLE STEPS

How to use this tool

  1. Choose your GIF

Select a GIF up to 20MiB. Use Play or the Preview frame slider to inspect the decoded animation before making changes.

  2. Choose your settings

Keep Scale 1 and Lossless colors for the default conversion. Optionally adjust scale, Keep every Nth frame or enable FPS resampling.

  3. Inspect and download

Select Generate result, inspect the animated preview, and download APNG or PNG. Both extensions contain the same PNG data.

MADE FOR THIS TASK

Key features

  • Convert decoded frames losslessly

Default settings keep the original size, colors, transparency, delays and loop count. APNG cannot restore detail already lost in a GIF.

  • Adjust size or frame sampling

Optionally scale, resample at FPS or keep every Nth frame. Download animated PNG bytes with either .apng or .png extension.

  • Free, without an account

Use the available controls, preview and downloads without sign-up or payment. Processing runs on your device within the stated format and memory limits.

What GIF to APNG changes

Choose a GIF and keep the default lossless, original-size settings to preserve its decoded frames. You can adjust scale, enable FPS resampling or keep every Nth frame.

Frame skipping carries removed delays into the retained frame, preserving total duration. FPS resampling can repeat or drop frames. The .apng and .png downloads contain the same animated PNG bytes.

Format details and limits

APNG supports truecolor and partial alpha, but converting an existing GIF cannot recover discarded colors or transparency. Output may be larger. One input frame produces a static PNG rather than an animation.

A practical example

Use a transparent looping GIF as input when an application expects animated PNG. First try lossless conversion, then reduce dimensions if file size matters.

Supported files and processing limits

Animation input is limited to 20MiB, 4 megapixels per frame, 300 frames and a 128MiB RGBA frame cache.

Processing and packaging stop after 60 seconds. Device memory and browser capabilities can limit smaller files too. Cancel or clear the task to release its working results; changing a setting clears the old download.

A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Why are there both PNG and APNG download links?

They contain the same PNG bytes with different filename extensions. Multi-frame input produces an APNG; a single input frame produces a static PNG. Your destination must support animated PNG to play it.

Will APNG restore colors missing from my GIF?

No. APNG can store richer color and alpha information, but conversion preserves only the information available in the source GIF.

Why can the APNG be larger than the original GIF?

Truecolor PNG compression differs from GIF palette compression, so lossless conversion can increase size. Try a smaller scale or fewer frames if size matters; those settings change the output rather than restoring image quality.

Why was my file rejected?

Input up to 20MiB, 4 megapixels per frame and 300 frames. Total RGBA frame cache is limited to 128MiB. Invalid or unsupported file data is rejected. Try a smaller file or another browser if memory or encoding support is insufficient.

Are my files sent to a server?

No. Your input and generated output remain in your browser. Close the page or clear the tool to release its local results.
